    Description:

The time-saving TURBOSHEAR Model No. TS1 inserts directly into the chuck of a standard 1200 rpm A/C or cordless drill. It’s that easy to convert your power drill to a power shear!

This rugged but inexpensive accessory cuts straight and to the left and is capable of navigating tight curved patterns and squares in heavy 20-gauge (1.02 mm) galvanized steel. Blind cuts require only a 1/2”(12.7 mm) starting hole. Cutting applications include both ferrous and non-ferrous sheet metals, metal roofing/building panels, vinyl, steel mesh, ductwork, even the thick metal of furnace jackets, equipment enclosures or automotive body panels. An offset design keeps both hands away from work surface. Long-wearing hardened jaws are also replaceable.

I work as a carpenter on a shipyard. I am the resident "metal expert", as I have learned to design, cut, and bend galvanized sheetmetal, stainless steel for finished work on our boats. Our shop had been using electric shears, and snips to cut the sheetmetal. The electric shears wore out very quickly from inappropriate use of the shears, and the snips took too long to cut long necessary pieces. I did some shopping and bought these Malco TS-1 shears, took it to work and was cutting a stainless ceiling panel on an angle when my boss came and saw the result in a very short period of time, he ordered three for the shop. Unfortunately, improper use can cause the blades to wear very quickly. I have had my TS-1 for over a year and have yet to have any problems, even after hundreds of cuts. The three shop TS-1s are already dull and cause wavy cuts on both sides.
With the TS-1 you need to cut in the proper direction in relation to which piece you are going to keep. The good piece needs to be on the LEFT side of the cut. This will provide a beautiful clean cut with very minimal "waves" whereas the right side will be terribly wavy. Also, the TS-1 acts just like a pair of offset snips: the left blade must be slightly tilted to the right so as the material lies flat on the blade.

In theory this is a nice tool and it might be well suited for thin aluminum or perhaps thin duct, but there is no way this would be able to cut 20 gauge. The pictures I posted was my short attempt in using the tool to cut old 26g galvanized metal barn siding.

To be fair, the tool was very easy to use. I was using the 2x6 you can see in the pictures as a guide and was hoping to trim off the bottom as I was putting a header on the shed. The tool was slow but that was not an issue as I wanted a nice cut. The red handle kept slipping off but otherwise is was no worse than using an electric can opener. When it got to the middle of the first piece it started having problems (that was about a foot of cutting), When I got to the 2nd piece of shed siding it was basically bending the metal and straining the drill. After about 18 inches it was not cutting at all and ended up smoking my DeWalt 18v cordless.

It''s not like I was trying to cut through a car roof, which is typically 20 gauge. After the disaster I have pictured here I tried it on a simple piece of new L-flashing that was so thin you could cut it with scissors. The tool failed to cut that as well.

The rusty siding that I provided pictures with was was eventually trimmed with a simple pair of tin-snips, so it''s not that thick of material.

I really had hopes this would work but it did not and after just a few minutes it was totally useless. I had no choice but to return it. This might last a while on flat 29g tin, but anything thicker or ridged will likely end up destroying the material or whatever power tool you are using.

I was putting up a steel ceiling in my pole shed. I needed to trim the last row to fit. This was a little more than 48 feet of 29 gauge steel.

The Malco Turbo Shear quickly cut thru the steel. There was no reduction in performance of the tool as the cut progressed. I used a 3/8" corded right angle electric drill to drive the shear. There was some distortion and marking of the steel near the cut, but not so much that my trim molding did not hide.

This tool really beat the pants off of using a Wiss metal shear.

I purchased the sheers drill attachment after seeing a video about the "new" dewalt sheer attachment. I read the reviews about the dewalt and several made comments about durability. "When the dewalt doesn''t hold up, buy Malco" . So I checked out the reviews on them. I got to use them today for the first time. They are awesome. They ripped through the metal I was cutting like butter (not sure the gage but to put a crease in it, I need a hammer. I can''t just fold it and smash it down). My advice would be to look for the upgraded model though. It comes with the drill clamp that makes it one handed. Without the drill clamp you have to hold the handle on the sheers also. You can however buy a after market drill clamp that works, which is what I did. I would buy this product again since I already have a drill clamp.

Alot of sheers, snips or scissors will cut out a chunk on either side of the line that you''re cutting and not only makes waste but also you have to clean it all up. These things are very sharp and work great. Dewalt makes some that hard fix it to the impact making it harder to operate. These float so you can cut standing on either side of the table and move the gun whichever way you''d like while maintaining a straight cut! They also cut sheet metal like moses parted the red sea!

I had some metal roof material I needed to cut. It takes some practice and getting used to but it cut through the metal easily. Since the metal was corrugated, I suggest that you put the metal on a firm board on the back and perhaps a board across the top to brace the metal as it will vibrate. The bracing will help stabliize the material and make the cut smoother and cleaner. Also, don''t use a portable drill; it is too slow. Use a powered drill and the work will be much faster.

I was planning to steal an idea I saw on the internet and build some outdoor planters using corrugated steel roofing panels (and a wood frame). I bought the panels and some manual tin snips and got to work. I gave up after 5 minutes with horribly cut-up hands and jagged curled-up cuts. I then tried a jigsaw with a metal blade, and while that did work, it was VERY loud and left metal filings everywhere. I more or less gave up on the planters until I saw this product and thought I''d try it.

Clearly I''ve never used power metal shears before, because I became ecstatic about how easy it was to cut those panels with this device. It took a few tries to get the feel of it right (especially on the corrugated ridges), but then cutting those panels was a piece of cake.

I was also pleasantly surprised that there wasn''t much torque on the red handle while using it. For some reason I was envisioning having to hold onto that handle for dear life to try and keep it from spinning along with the drill. The spinning part that gets stuck into the drill has very little resistance, and so I was actually able to rig up a bracket to hold the handle in place (like the bracket they sell separately) using only zip-ties.

So while I can''t compare this to a quality power shear, it beats the heck of trying to cut metal by hand.

I work alone in place other than a work shop that makes it difficult to do both hold the piece and use the cutter. If there was an option to lock and unlock the cutter depending on use, I would have kept it. Unfortunately. I returned the item. It didn’t suit me but could suit you depending on how you work. I assume it cuts well even though I haven’t managed to use it and actually cut something.

I watched a number of YouTube videos on the various Malco Turbo Shears. I was trying to cut a corrugated metal water tank. I wasn''t trying to cut over the valleys and ridges of the corrugation, I was trying to cut along either a valley or a ridge. I could only get about 2 or 3 centimetres ( an inch and a half), then it would jam, and I could not get it to cut any further. Very disappointed, as I bought it specifically for this one job. As it was made in USA and not China, I had high hopes. I guess if you were cutting a sheet of totally flat metal, that was clamped down, It might work okay. Also more practice might help. I had to resort to an angle-grinder instead.

They fit nicely in your tool bag and will work in any drill or impact which we all have already. I haven’t had them long but even if they only last a couple years it’s worth the money you can buy five for what I paid for my makita shears. They turn corners sharp and cut relatively fast. All in all I am happy with my purchase.
