High res in your car audio setup

I bought this player so I can download Qobuz
And it be my source unit for my car stereo

I have a Jl audio twk88
I bought a audio quest 3.5mm to rca cable so I can rca in to my twk dsp

But something important not given is the output voltage. That is needed to set input level on the twk.
I found a test time for dac linerarity on Qobuz
With volume at 118 of 120 on low gain its .58v
And with high gain setting it’s 1.0v output
This is coming from the standard 3.5mm aux output jack
I have not yet measured voltage using the 4.4mm balanced output.

The signal to noise ratio and THD is not given by Sony. I almost returned the player because of this
But since it’s easy to use and can easily download apps I will live with the not knowing part..

The screen is small so it can be annoying to search for music. But like an iPhone there is a microphone button and you can talk into the device to search for stuff.. so that’s why I will give it a chance. The player is built well
But comes with no accessories

One of the main reasons I chose this player was it’s direct output feature. That disables all the (special features) eq and sound enhancements.
That is what my dsp is for.

So yes you can completely bypass your factory radio and come out of the player and rca into your dsp and use the volume knob to control the volume of your music . In my case it’s a twk 88 and a drc205 knob.
You will get much cleaner sound when your source is only intended for high res music play back.

All amps and speakers play what ever signal you give them do not buy speakers because they have some yellow and black label that says high res

I’m personally running alpine pdx v9 amps image dynamics subs idmax 10’s
Image dynamics cxs 6.5” midbass and
CDT audio unity 8.0 2” mid/tweet drivers

They are not “high res” certified but they DO play high res signal beautiful
I have zero complaints and I wanted to clarify a lot of grey area and misinformation about how to make high res work in your car with out getting rid of equipment You already own

I used DAP instead of MP3 Player. This Digital Audio Player is meant for Hi-Res audio. You can still play MP3 audio files on it, but do yourself a favor and get some Hi-Res audio files. Superb sound, the Android OS is easy to use, and the ability to stream music from Tidal, Amazon, and others is the main I reason I bought it. Easy to setup and configure. and did I mention the Sound? Exceptional - well worth the 830.00. Get yourself some quality Hi-Res headphones as well. The Sony WH-1000XM4 are a great choice, as well as the SONY MDR-Z1R (if you have the bucks). Also get a balanced cable adapter to use with the balanced output. The SinLoon 4.4mm Male to 3.5mm Female Balanced Cable is a good choice. Sony is known for its excellent electronics and does not disappoint with this DAP. Listen to Summer from Vivaldi''s The Four Seasons on the NW-ZX507- it will give you chills.

The sound quality was fantastic, as expected and the interface, being Android based, was smooth and responsive. A great DAP packed into a sleek package, this Walkman works great for locally stored music and streamed content, alike. Only complaint would be that the power output is low (read: VERY low). This is not a problem for me since I use high sensitivity IEMs, but for anyone who wants to use a DAP with anything harder to drive, this may not be the right choice (unless you use an additional external amp, which defeats the purpose of an all-in-one DAP).

We love this. We are not audio technical experts so will not speak to technical specifics but will say this Sony NW-ZX507 Walkman ZX produces great sound. We have it plugged into our Paradigm sound system in our living room and the music quality has gone up. We do not want to keep all our CDs in the living room and manually load them. So easier to have it all on a device that is plugged into our stereo system. Previously, we used an Apple iPod classic (the most expensive Apple iPod, which was not really cheap, yet broke after a couple of years) to hold our music and connect to our house stereo system....the sound of the Sony NW-ZX507 Walkman ZX is just so much better - fuller, better at high and low ranges - no more thin, hollow , tinny feeling anymore. I mean we thought it was good with the iPod Classic until we heard this. Sony NW-ZX507 Walkman ZX is great for rock n roll and classical music. I wish you could hear it for yourself. Awesome sound. We had our playlists saved in iTunes. But you cannot download playlists from iTunes to a PC to a non-Apple MP3 player -that we could figure out anyway. However, all the music you have purchased using iTunes works on the Sony Walkman (as well as any CDs you have uploaded to your music library) . Whatever you purchased and downloaded from iTunes will be on your computer and easy access for Sony. And if you purchase more songs from iTunes, you can download them to your pc hard disk and transfer over to Sony Music Center and then to the Walkman easily. The Sony comes with the option to download the Sony Music Centre software for free, so we did. Using that on our PC with Windows 10 we copied over our music (albums and songs) to the Music Centre - very easy to do. Then we named new playlists and copied the songs we wanted into them. So we have the option of playing an album or a playlist - on our computer (with its speakers), or our stereo system with the Sony plugged into it, or through headphones. Reviews say to check out volumes and wireless life with Bluetooth headphones. The only criticism I would make (and this is true for most electronic devices these days) is that it should come with an actual booklet with detailed instructions, as well as having it on the net. We are software technical (work hi-tech) and yet it took time to futz around and figure out what to do. There isn''t anyone out there to phone for help, so you really do need to understand from written instructions. There is a software update you need to do as soon as you plug in the Walkman. BUT this does not work until you unlock the Walkman (locked is the odd default state). So, the software update keeps attempting and interfering until you unlock. To unlock: swipe up on the Walkman and type in passcode (which you set when you initialize the Walkman – a menu you walk through when you first use the Walkman). I did say we transferred over the music – well there was a glitch. **** A mystery with a solution: when we first tried transferring music and playlists from the pc to the Walkman some stuff moved over but not all. ??? We realized that we did not have enough space on the Walkman for all of our music because the Sony Operating system takes up some storage. The Walkman has 64 GB of space. We had 48 GB of music. Home free, right? No. The OS takes up 20 GB on the Walkman. We were 4 GB short for all our music on the Walkman. So then we tried to transferring a couple of playlists. But that did not happen. We tested transferring over some music - a few GB. That worked. But not the playlists. So we did the software upgrade (after unlocking) and then waited for it to kick in and reboot – 5, 10 minutes. THEN we unplugged the Walkman for 10 minutes, turned it off and on (in a desperate attempt to get something to work - playlist transfer from PC Sony Music Centre to Walkman) and then plugged it back in … and then the playlists showed up. Best guess, you need to unlock Walkman, update software while plugged in to pc, WAIT for that to kick in (give it a ½ hour), unplug Walkman from pc, wait another 10 minutes, reboot, plug back in. Look, there may be an elegant way to do this but we got there with this…**** Sony, more instructions, ok? Back to our music space shortage on the Walkman: We solved this by buying an extra memory card of 64 GB. We really do not think we will ever need 108 GB of total memory but now we have more than enough space. The card was only $25. You just pull out a little tray, snap the memory card into slot (with the correct orientation) and snap it back into a slot in the player. The Walkman finds it. The card we bought was: Samsung EVO Select 64GB microSDXC UHS-I U1 100MB/s Full HD & 4K UHD Memory Card with Adapter (MB-ME64HA) on Amazon Prime for about $25. If you need more memory this is in the specs - different type of cards for different amount of memory: microSD card slot accepts, microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC cards (available separately) The Sony Music Centre software is serviceable and works. But it would be nice if it offered a couple of extra features. For example, we had some music saved to 2 directories on our computer with some duplicates. That isn''t Sony''s fault but a ''no duplicate'' tool would have been nice with the Music Centre. We have a LOT of music so it took several hours to transfer all our music songs and albums to the Sony Music Centre from our pc directories. And, for example, we love the Beatles but did not need 2 copies of all their albums on our computer and could not remove duplicates from the Music Centre. So, we purchased and downloaded a program the deletes duplicates from our pc hard disk directories. The program was WebMinds, Easy Duplicate Finder. It found and removed the duplicates on our pc correctly without any problems. Then when we transferred the music from pc to Music Centre there were not duplicates (ok, a few for a few ''naming reasons'' but not much). Also, you can search for a song from the total list of songs, but not within a playlist. To find a certain song in a playlist you have to scroll around to see it. Also, for some playlists, I would like to be able to re-sort songs on different criteria -- such as composer, or artist, genre, group, or random. But the songs go in in the order they are dragged in. So, for example, you drag in Sinatra, Bublé, Krall, and you would like the music playlist not to play as all Sinatra, all Krall, etc -- so would like to shuffle it. You can do that on the Sony Walkman but would need to do it each time. So what you want is to mix it up on the playlist on the computer with a tool. But you need to do it manually. So, drag a few Krall songs into the top of the list when Sinatra it etc. It is possible and we did it but takes longer. Sony, add these features to Music Center: Remove duplicates option. Re-sort songs on playlists option. Ability to search for a specific song not only in the whole Music Center library, but also search for a single song in a playlist. Just a happy note: This is documented in the sheet of instructions but is worth mentioning. The capacitors of the Walkman train themselves for 100 hours. So, the music actually sounds even better after a 100 hours of play. We thought it was great right away, and then hours later even better. Looking forward to hearing it after 100 hours. Buy the Sony NW-ZX507 Walkman ZX, you won’t be sorry.

Fantastic build and design, superb sound with the usual Sony settings and options, the only affordable quality streaming device (Tidal & Spotify) - the other options on the market being irrationally expensive or with crippled old version Androids. Has 4.4mm balanced besides regular 3.5mm (just use ddHiFi jack converter for 3.5 or 2.5 to 4.4). Very strong Bluetooth and WiFi. Sony''s LDAC is a bonus. No Line out. Super quick charging - I tried OnePlus quick Dash charger and it juices up extremely fast! There''s one BIG fly in the ointment: This one is hard to swallow. Like a fuel gauge in a Ferrari, the battery will deplete VERY fast while streaming or with WiFi and BT enabled. Considering Sony''s battery technology in other devices, this is quite unpalatable. If you can keep charging frequently, this is a lovely device. I kept it because of the aforementioned positive aspects besides not wanting to kill the battery in smartphones streaming music. In terms of sound, using 4.4mm balanced cable with Shure SE846, it''s almost like Cowon Plenue P2 (with all the Sony equalizer and other Normalization settings OFF). I couldn''t find a Sleep Timer on the Sony Music app. Able to install any Android app to connect to server. Have disabled all other distractions (Google mail, Calendar, Chrome, etc.) as Smartphones do this anyway and to keep this purely a music player. UPDATE: Okay, after using this for some time, I HAVE to give it solid 5 stars. Exceptionall sound! Just turn off all the equalizers and pick "Direct" source if you want warm unadulterated sound. Of course, it''s personal taste. You can turn on anything to your preference. If you save Tidal/Spotify and turn off WiFi a& Bluetooth, it lasts for 15-20 hrs. The device is built like a tank and yet, it''s so very light. Can''t rave about that pure sound on Shure SE846. Love it!

Slight update... as of 7 Sep 2021. Includes observations since I posted my original review. As a high resolution audio player, this Sony is hard to beat. I have tried Astell&Kern, FiiO and Hidisz and this is the best of them. Granted, it cost almost double, so it may not be a fair comparison. This unit comes with two headphone jacks, a 3.5 mm minijack and a 4. 4 mm 5-pole balanced jack. I bought a pair of wired headphones (Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7bBK) with a cable for the balanced jack. The result of this combination is the best sounding portable music player that i have heard. I am to connect a pair of B&O BeoPlay 9i Bluetooth headphones, but the wired headphones sound better. It comes with a swack of features, most of which I don''t use. It connects to WiFi so that you can access high resolution streaming services. I mainly use TIDAL. It supports Bluetooth 5.0 for wireless connections to headphones and speakers. It has the Android 9.0 OS (for some reason you have to have a Google account to access..., I can read my email on the thing!). Battery life is supposed to be 20 hours, but I have never come close to that. Internally, it has a 64GB memory, but it also has a microSD slot for additional memory. Theoretically, it can handle a 1TB card, but I "only" have a 512GB card in mine. It does take about 4 hours to create the library index for the music that is on the card, but I consider that to be part of the setup. One minor quibble is that it will shuffle songs, but it won''t shuffle albums, a feature that I loved on my old iPod Classic. Are there better players out there? Probably, but I stretched my budget big time to get this, and I can''t see there being much of an improvement to warrant spending considerably more cash. I have already mentioned the lack of an album shuffle feature (which I view as a failing of all the Hi-Res DAPs that I have tried). I have worked around this by playing the music in alphabetical order by album title. I am still trying to get out of the A''s. The Micro-SD slot is not particularly well designed. There is a plastic piece that has to be pulled out completely from the unit in order to insert the Micro-SD. I find that this piece is fragile and I keep feeing that I will break it whenever I feel the need to exchange the card. Also, when it is out, it doesn''t hold the card well. It keeps falling out until I successfully get the piece with the card back in place. The placement of the USB-C slot is on the left side of the unit instead of the bottom. As I tend to leave the USB-C cord plugged in, it makes it a little clumsy sometimes. I have changed my headphones from the Audio-Technica set I mentioned above to Meze Classic 99. I was pleasantly surprised by the improvement in sound quality. I have since passed the Audio-Technica headphones onto my son who was thrilled to get them.

Better than NW-A105 (but pricer for sure)

Better than NW-A105 in all aspects: making, sound quality, battery life (not so much though), smoothness of system, except the size a bit bigger, it’s a real good player overall, it drives my 1am2 really well even my z1r, love it and recommended!

Un son pur et parfait

Avec des écouteurs filaire en Hi-RES, le son est parfait peu importe l''intensité du volume. Pour les amants de la musique classique ou pour le Rock, c''est le walkman parfait.
